Acupuncture Without Borders On or near Veterans Day in November, acupuncturists around the country will be holding events to help raise awareness about how acupuncture can go a long way toward healing stress and trauma and to educate the public about these free veterans clinics. Acupuncture can play a major role in conflict recovery programs. On Veterans Day in November, many combat veterans will be suffering from serious acute traumatic stress – they may be having flashbacks, panic, insomnia, suicidal ideation, or any number of symptoms, as they do many days of the year. According to the Rand study from April of 2008, one in five Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans suffer from PTSD or major depression. In response, Acupuncturists Without Borders has implemented a nationwide program to provide free acupuncture to veterans and their family members.

Acupuncturists Without Borders began by treating residents, volunteers, relief workers, first responders and military personnel in post-Katrina New Orleans. AWB successfully carried out its mission to provide free trauma relief services and treated 8000 people with group acupuncture treatments, and hundreds more in its California Wildfires relief effort in October 2007 as well as its Iowa Floods effort in June 2008. AWB is continually expanding the Veterans Project, with 17 cities and towns currently involved, and with more communities around the country joining every month.

At the November 9th Event, Community Style Acupuncture will consist of:
* Acupuncture needles on the ears only; in a group setting.
* 30 – 45 minute treatments.
* All needles are pre-packaged, sterile, and disposed of after use.
* Treatment to help reduce stress and anxiety; help with trouble sleeping; provide a general sense of well-being and make you feel better.
*Donations for treatments will go to support the opening of new Veterans Clinics across the country. Suggested donation per treatment is $20.00.

The focus of AWB’s work with veterans is to help with post-combat stress and trauma. The testimonials from those who have received these treatments point to their success and the urgency for more. You can find testimonials and more information on the organization at Acupuncturists Without Borders.

Raul Rojas, a Veteran and participant in the Albuquerque Clinic for the Veterans Project has found great value in this burgeoning program and states, “I believe that because of the acupuncture treatments I have become calmer and my anxiety level has drastically come down. I’m able to sleep more restfully and longer and without nightmares or flashbacks…Acupuncture is helping me get my life back.
